Póvoa de Varzim is a city located in Northern Portugal within the sub-region of Greater Porto. Situated on a sandy coastal plain known as a cuspate foreland, it lies approximately halfway between the Minho and Douro rivers. The city is positioned roughly 30 km from its city centre.

The urban area of Póvoa de Varzim has expanded southward toward Vila do Conde, resulting in an estimated population of about 100,000 people within the immediate urban zone. As of 2001, the city proper recorded 42,396 inhabitants out of a total of 63,470 for the municipality. It currently ranks as the third-largest urban agglomeration in Northern Portugal and the seventh-largest in the country.
