Porto, also known as Oporto, is the second largest city in Portugal after Lisbon. Located on the Iberian Peninsula, it serves as the capital of the Porto District and is considered one of the region's major urban areas.
The city proper comprises the entire municipality of Porto, which covers a municipal area of 41.42 km2 (16 sq mi) with an estimated population of 273,476 people. In contrast, the larger Porto metropolitan area encompasses approximately 2,395 km2 (925 sq mi) and has a population of around 1.9 million people as of 2025.
Porto is recognized as a global city with a Gamma + rating from the Globalization and World Cities Research Network.
