Sabugal is a city and municipality located in the District of Guarda in Portugal. Situated at an elevation of approximately 750 meters (2,460 feet) above sea level, it is recognized as one of the highest cities in the country. The municipality serves as a border region with Spain and covers an area of 822.70 km2.
The city proper is situated along the Côa River and has a population of about 3,000 inhabitants, while the broader municipality had a population of 12,544 in 2011. Notable landmarks include a castle within the city itself, as well as several other castles located throughout the municipality at Sortelha, Alfaiates, Vilar Maior, and Vila do Touro.
The region features infrastructure and recreational sites along the Côa River, including the Sabugal Dam built in 2000 and the Devesa river beach. The municipal holiday is observed on the Monday following the Octave of Easter.
