Vila Real de Santo António is a city, civil parish, and municipality located in the Algarve region of Portugal. As of the 2011 census, the area had a population of 19,156 and covers a total area of 61.25 km2 (23.65 sq mi).
The municipality is notable for lacking territorial continuity, as its territory consists of two separate parts with the municipal seat situated in the eastern section. The city was founded following the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and underwent significant expansion in 1774. During this period of growth, it utilized the same architectural and construction techniques used to rebuild Lisbon after the disaster.
