Tavira, officially known as the City of Tavira, is a town and municipality located in the eastern Algarve region on the south coast of Portugal. It serves as the capital of the Costa do Acantilado and is situated approximately 28 kilometres east of Faro and 75 kilometres west of Huelva, Spain, across the Guadiana River. The Gilão River meets the Atlantic Ocean within the town.
The municipality covers an area of 606.97 square kilometres and had a recorded population of 26,167 in 2011. Tavira is notably recognized as the Portuguese representative community for the inscription of the Mediterranean Diet as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
