Portimão is a city and municipality located in the district of Faro within the Algarve region of southern Portugal. Formerly known as Vila Nova de Portimão, it was officially incorporated as a cidade in 1924, at which point it adopted its current name. As of 2022, the city has a population of 63,079 and covers an area of 182.06 km2.
Historically established as a center for shipbuilding and fishing, Portimão has evolved into a prominent tourist destination focused on its southern coast and beaches. It remains one of the two largest population centers in the Algarve region.
