Vila Nova de Famalicão, also known as Famalicão, is a city located in the Braga District of Portugal within the sub-region of Vale do Ave. The local inhabitants are referred to as Famalicenses.
The population of Vila Nova was established in 1205 through a charter granted by King Sancho I. In 1835, the municipality was created as a detachment from Barcelos and was subsequently elevated to the status of "Vila" by a charter from Queen D. Maria II. The settlement was officially elevated to the category of "city" in 1985 following approval by the National Assembly.
