Belzec was a Nazi German extermination camp located in occupied Poland within the new Lublin District of the General Government territory. Situated approximately 500 meters south of the local railroad station of Bełżec, the site was constructed by the SS specifically to facilitate Operation Reinhard. This secret plan aimed to murder all Polish Jews as part of the "Final Solution," the broader Nazi effort to commit genocide against the European Jewish population.
The camp operated from March 17, 1942, until the end of June 1943. During this period, the facility was used for mass murder and the disposal of bodies. Notable characteristics of the site's operations included the burning of exhumed corpses on five open-air grids and a bone crushing process that continued until March 1943.
