Sukkur is a city located in the Pakistani province of Sindh, situated on the western bank of the Indus River. It sits directly across from the historic city of Rohri and serves as the third-largest city in Sindh, following Karachi and Hyderabad. By population, it ranks as the 17th largest city in Pakistan.
The origins of Sukkur date back to its founding by the Rai dynasty of Sindh, though the modern city was constructed during the 1840s. During the British era, a new settlement known as New Sukkur was established alongside the original village of Sukkur. The area is geographically notable for its hills; the hill in Sukkur and the hill on the river island of Bukkur are sometimes referred to as the "Gate of Sindh."
