Zona Sur is one of five natural regions established by CORFO to divide continental Chile in 1950. It is located in the southern portion of the country, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Andean mountains and Argentina to the east.
The region's boundaries are defined by specific geographical landmarks: its northern border is formed by the Bío-Bío River, which separates it from the Central Chile Zone. To the south, the Chacao Channel serves as the boundary with the Austral Zone. Although the Chiloé Archipelago is geographically closer to Zona Sur, it is categorized within the Austral Zone for cultural and historical reasons.
