Zamboanga City is a city located in the Philippines that serves as the origin of the Zamboangueño people. The Zamboangueño are a creole ethnolinguistic group characterized by their history of Hispanization during the Spanish colonial period.
The population originated from Subanon people who were influenced by various ethnic groups brought to the city under Spanish rule. Unlike other hispanized groups in the Philippines who retained their indigenous languages, the Zamboangueño did not pass down their original Subanon language to younger generations. This resulted in the adoption of Spanish as a primary language and the subsequent development of Chavacano, a creole language.
