Medellín, officially known as the Special District of Science, Technology and Innovation of Medellín, is a major city located in northwestern South America. It serves as the capital of the department of Antioquia and is situated within the Aburrá Valley in a central region of the Andes Mountains.

As the second-largest city in Colombia after Bogotá, Medellín has a population of 2,427,129 according to the 2018 census. Its metro area constitutes the country's second-largest urban agglomeration, housing more than 4 million people and serving as a significant economic hub.
