Port Moresby, also known as Pom City or Moresby, is the capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea. Situated on the south-western coast of the Papuan Peninsula on the island of New Guinea, it is located along the shores of the Coral Sea. It stands as one of the largest cities in the southwestern Pacific region outside of Australia and New Zealand.
The city developed as a trade center during the second half of the 19th century. It gained significant historical importance during World War II, serving as a primary objective for Imperial Japanese forces between 1942 and 1943 to establish an air base and staging point intended to isolate Australia from Southeast Asia and the Americas. Due to its substantial population and influence relative to other urban centers in the country, Port Moresby is considered a primate city.
