Kokopo is the capital city of East New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea. It serves as the administrative center for the province and is governed under the Kokopo/Vunamami Urban Local-Level Government.
The town became the provincial capital in 1994 following the relocation from Rabaul, which was necessitated by the eruptions of the Tavurvur and Vulcan volcanoes. This transition resulted in a significant population increase for the city, growing from 3,150 residents in 1990 to over 20,000 by the year 2000.
