Tacna, officially known as San Pedro de Tacna, is a city located in southern Peru. It serves as the capital of the department of Tacna and is situated within the Caplina River valley, approximately 35 km (22 mi) north of the border with Chile.
The city is one of Peru's primary commercial centers and ranks as the country's tenth most populous urban area. Its inhabitants are referred to as tacneños.
Tacna is characterized by a strong patriotic identity, which is reflected in its local geography and architecture. The city features numerous monuments and specific place names that commemorate Peru's independence and the historical events of the War of the Pacific.
