Talara is a port city located in the Talara Province of the Piura Region in northwestern Peru. Situated on the Pacific Ocean, the city has a population of 91,444 as of 2017 and is characterized by a hot and dry climate.
The city is notable for its oil reserves and its capacity to produce aviation fuel. These resources led to Talara hosting a United States air base during World War II, where it served as one of two refueling stations for the Pacific Fleet. During this period, the harbor featured submarine nets and naval guns were stationed on nearby hills. Notably, British destroyers Ajax, Achilles, and Exeter refueled at the port while traveling around the Horn to intercept the Graf Spee in Rio de la Plata.
In addition to its historical significance in maritime logistics, Talara is home to a large fishing fleet. The city is served by the Cap. FAP Víctor Montes Arias Airport.
