Huancayo is the capital of the Junín Region and Huancayo Province, located in the central highlands of Peru within the Mantaro Valley. The city is situated at an altitude of 3,256 meters above sea level and is crossed by the Shullcas, Chilca, and Mantaro rivers. It serves as a primary economic and social center for central Peru.
Founded on June 1, 1572, by Spanish conquistador Don Jerónimo de Silva, the city was originally established as a reduction named Santísima Trinidad de Huancayo. Today, it is the fifth largest city in Peru, with a population exceeding 500,000 residents.
