Huánuco is a city located in central Peru. It serves as the capital of both the Huánuco Region and the Huánuco District. The city also functions as the seat of the diocese of Huánuco.
The metropolitan area of Huanuco has a population of approximately 170,000 residents. As of 2017, the city's population was recorded at 196,627, following a figure of 175,068 in 2015. The metropolitan area is composed of three districts: Huanuco (the head district), Amarilis, and Pillco Marca.
Geographically, the city is notable for being the location where the Higueras River meets the Huallaga River, which is one of the largest rivers in Peru.
