Ayacucho is the capital city of the Ayacucho Region and the Huamanga Province in Peru. It was founded in 1540 under the name San Juan de la Frontera de Huamanga.
The city was known simply as Huamanga until 1825, at which point it became known by its current name. It serves as a primary administrative center for the region.
