Muscat is the capital and most populous city of Oman. It serves as the seat of the Governorate of Muscat and is situated on the Gulf of Oman near the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz. The metropolitan area covers approximately 6,500 km2 (2,500 sq mi) and encompasses six provinces known as wilayat.
The city's landscape is characterized by low-lying white buildings and a view dominated by the Hajar Mountains. Notable landmarks include the port district of Muttrah, which features a harbor and corniche at the city's north-eastern edge. The regional economy is primarily driven by trade, petroleum, liquefied natural gas, and porting activities.
