New Plymouth is the major city of the Taranaki region located on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. The city was named in reference to the English city of Plymouth in Devon, which served as the point of origin for the first English settlers who migrated to New Plymouth.
The broader New Plymouth District encompasses the city and several smaller towns, including Waitara, Inglewood, Ōakura, Ōkato, and Urenui. As the 10th largest district in New Zealand, it holds a population of approximately 90,100 people, which accounts for about two-thirds of the total population of the Taranaki region.
