Invercargill is a city located in the Southland region of New Zealand. It serves as the commercial center for the region and holds the distinction of being the southernmost and westernmost city in New Zealand, as well as one of the southernmost cities in the world.
The city is situated in the middle of the expansive Southland Plains, positioned to the east of the Ōreti, also known as the New River. It lies approximately 18 km north of Bluff, which is the southernmost town on the South Island. The surrounding area consists of rich farmland bordered by significant conservation land and marine reserves, including the Catlins coastal region and Fiordland National Park in the south-west corner of the island.
