Whangārei is the northernmost city in New Zealand and serves as the largest settlement within the Northland Region. It is situated within the Whangarei District, a local government area established in 1989 by merging the former councils of Whangarei City, Whangarei County, and Hikurangi Town to manage both the urban center and its surrounding hinterland.
The city has experienced steady population growth over recent decades. As of June 2025, the estimated population was 56,100, reflecting an increase from 47,000 recorded in 2001.
