Christchurch is the largest city in New Zealand's South Island and ranks as the second-largest city by urban area population in the country. It is situated in the Canterbury Region, positioned near the center of the east coast of the South Island, east of the Canterbury Plains. The city is located near the southern end of Pegasus Bay, bounded to the east by the Pacific Ocean and to the south by the ancient volcanic complex of the Banks Peninsula.
The urban landscape is characterized by a relatively flat topography, averaging about 20 meters above sea level, with the exception of the Port Hills. The Avon River, also known as the Ōtākaro, flows through the center of the city, where it is flanked by a large urban park. Christchurch features a temperate oceanic climate with regular moderate rainfall.
The city is known for its historic Māori heritage and its reputation as an English-style city. It earned the nickname "Garden City" due to architectural identities and similarities with garden cities found in England.
