Tauranga is a coastal city located in the Bay of Plenty Region of New Zealand. It currently ranks as the fifth-most populous city in the country, with an urban population of approximately 160,900, representing roughly 3% of the national population.
The area was first settled by Māori in the late 13th century before being colonized by Europeans during the early 19th century. Tauranga was officially constituted as a city in 1963.
