Rotorua is a city located in the Bay of Plenty region on New Zealand's North Island. It is situated on the southern shores of Lake Rotorua, which provides the city with its name. The city serves as the seat of the Rotorua Lakes District, a territorial authority that governs Rotorua and several surrounding towns.

With an estimated resident population of 58,500, Rotorua is the 13th largest urban area in New Zealand. Within the Bay of Plenty region, it ranks as the second-largest urban area, following Tauranga.
