Birendranagar Municipality is a city located in the Surkhet District of Karnali Province, Nepal. It serves as the capital city of the Karnali province and functions as the district headquarters for Surkhet. As of March 2022, the city has a population of 154,886, ranking it as the 17th most populous city in the country.
The city is the largest in Karnali province and the seventh largest in Western Nepal. It is characterized by its rapid growth and its location on two national highways: the Ratna Highway and the Karnali Highway. Birendranagar is a constituent city of the Ratna Highway Metropolitan Area, which it shares with Nepalgunj and Kohalpur.
Geographically, the city offers views of the Mahabharata and Chure ranges as well as the inner Terai plain. It serves as a major trade center in mid-western Nepal and is noted for being one of the most expensive cities to live in the country.
