Jomsom, also known as Dzongsam, is a town located in the Mustang district of Nepal's Gandaki Province. Situated at an altitude of approximately 2,700 metres (8,900 ft), it serves as the centre of the Gharapjhong rural municipality and was formerly an independent village development committee.
The town is positioned along the Kali Gandaki River, which flows through its centre, and is framed by the mountain peaks of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri. The riverbanks are notable for containing shaligram, black fossilised stones that are considered holy symbols of the god Vishnu in Hindu culture. These stones are believed to be found exclusively within the Kali Gandaki.
