Dharan is a sub-metropolitan city located in the Sunsari District of Koshi Province in eastern Nepal. It was established as the fourth municipality in the Kingdom in 1958 and serves as a significant urban center in the region.
The city is currently the third most populous urban area in eastern Nepal, following Biratnagar and Itahari. The name "dharan" originates from the Nepali word for a saw pit.
