Urk is a municipality and town located in the Flevoland province in the center-north region of the Netherlands. As of 2025, the town has a population of 22,173. It is situated on the coast of the IJsselmeer and is surrounded by land on its other sides by the Noordoostpolder.
Historically, Urk was an island in the Almere, an inland sea that transitioned into part of the Zuiderzee during the 13th century following several North Sea incursions. The town's status as an island ended in 1939 with the construction of a dike from Lemmer, which connected it to the Dutch mainland.
