Lelystad is a Dutch municipality located in the central Netherlands. It serves as the capital city of the province of Flevoland and was founded in 1967. The city was named in honor of Cornelis Lely, the engineer responsible for constructing the Afsluitdijk, which enabled the reclamation of the land on which the city sits.
The municipality is situated on reclaimed land and is positioned approximately three metres below sea level. It remains a prominent example of Dutch land reclamation efforts in the region.
