Vlissingen is a municipality and city located in the southwestern Netherlands on the island of Walcheren. Situated between the Scheldt river and the North Sea, the city has served as an important harbor for several centuries due to its strategic geographical position.
The city was officially granted city rights in 1315. During the 17th century, the roadstead of Vlissingen functioned as a primary harbor for ships belonging to the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Additionally, the city is recognized as the birthplace of Lieutenant-Admiral Michiel de Ruyter.
