Schagen is a city and municipality situated in the northwestern Netherlands within the province of North Holland. It is geographically positioned between the cities of Alkmaar and Den Helder in the region known as West Friesland.
The settlement officially received its city rights in 1415. In 2013, the municipality underwent a reorganization by merging with the neighboring municipalities of Zijpe and Harenkarspel to form the current municipality of Schagen. The town hall for the municipality is located in the main town of Schagen.
