Hoorn is a city and municipality situated in the northwest of the Netherlands within the province of North Holland. It serves as the largest town and the traditional capital of the West Friesland region. The city is located on the Markermeer, positioned approximately 20 kilometers east of Alkmaar and 35 kilometers north of Amsterdam.
The municipality covers a land area of 20.38 square kilometers and has a population of just over 75,000 inhabitants. Due to its population size relative to its land area, it ranks as the third most densely populated municipality in North Holland, following Haarlem and Amsterdam. In addition to the city of Hoorn, the municipality encompasses the villages of Blokker and Zwaag, along with portions of the hamlets De Bangert, De Hulk, and Munnickaij.
