Ticuantepe is a town and municipality located in the Managua department of Nicaragua. It has an estimated population of 39,012 residents.
The municipality takes its name from the Nahua chiefdom of Tekwantepek, which was situated in the modern-day Ticuantepe area and its surroundings. According to historical accounts by Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés, Tekwantepek was a militarily strong chiefdom that was among the last to fall to the conquistadors and their central-Mexican allies.
The Nahua people chose to settle in Ticuantepe because of its rich agricultural potential. Located on the slopes of the Meseta de los Pueblos, the region features fertile volcanic soils and a cooler microclimate. These conditions made the area exceptionally productive for growing crops such as maize, cacao, beans, and avocados.
