Tagua is a city located in Nicaragua.
The name tagua is also commonly associated with the ivory palm, or ivory-nut palm, belonging to the genus Phytelephas. These dioecious palms are found throughout Central and South America, spanning regions from southern Panama through the Andes to Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, northwestern Brazil, and Peru.
The species are characterized by their very hard white endosperm, which closely resembles elephant ivory. The scientific name Phytelephas translates to "plant ivory" or "plant elephant," reflecting this physical similarity between the palm seeds and animal ivory.
