Awgu is a town and Local Government Area (LGA) located in Enugu State, Nigeria. Established in 1976 from the colonial District of Awgu, it serves as the mother local government area and the cultural and political headquarters for the Greater Awgu region, which includes the Awgu, Oji River, and Aninri local government areas. The LGA takes its name from Awgu Town, traditionally known as Awgu Egbeleli, where the local government headquarters is situated.
Geographically, the area is bounded by Udi and Nkanu West LGAs to the north, Oji River, Aninri, and Ivo (Ebonyi State) to the west, and Umunneochi (Abia State) to the south. The region is divided into two state constituencies: Awgu South and Awgu North. Notable landmarks include St Michael's Catholic Cathedral, which is noted for its unique appearance from satellite imagery, and the Orie Awgu market, a major hub for agricultural and food items that serves neighboring states.
Awgu Town also hosts the Orientation Training Centre for National Youth Service Corps members posted to Enugu State. The town's primary landmarks are situated on crown land known as the hilltop land. The local council area encompasses various communities, including Mmakụ, Mgbowo, and Agbogugu, among others.
