Gwandu, also known as Gando, is a local government area located in Nigeria's Kebbi State. The administrative headquarters for this region is situated in the town of Gwandu.
The settlement was established by Muhammadu Kanta, the founder of the Kebbi Kingdom. For centuries, it served as royal farmland, known as gandu, used by the kingdom's rulers. Following the establishment of the Sokoto Caliphate in the 19th century and the subsequent decline of the Kebbi Kingdom, Gwandu became a co-capital of the Caliphate. From this location, its Emirs were responsible for overseeing the southern and western territories.
While it held significant administrative importance as a co-capital, the capital of the Gwandu Emirate was eventually moved to Birnin Kebbi in 1906.
