Maiduguri is the capital and largest city of Borno State, located in north-eastern Nigeria on the African continent. The city is situated along the seasonal Ngadda River, which flows into the Firki swamps in the vicinity of Lake Chad.
Established in 1907 as a military outpost by the British Empire during the colonial period, Maiduguri has grown significantly since its founding. As of 2022, the metropolitan area is estimated to have a population of approximately two million people.
