Nkpor is a town located in the Idemili North local government area of Anambra State, Nigeria. It is situated adjacent to several neighboring communities, including Onitsha to the west, Oze to the north, Ogidi and Umuoji to the east, and Obosi to the south. As of 2007, the town had an estimated population of 109,377.
The name Nkpor is derived from a variation of the Igbo word "nkpogho," which translates to "repositioning." Historically, it was a traditional community that worshiped the God of their ancestors before the arrival of Christianity. The town is notably recognized for its farming prowess, specifically regarding maize known as "akpu aka Nkpor," which is characterized by its robust yield.
Cultural traditions in Nkpor emphasize agricultural wealth and hospitality. In ancient times, a person's status was measured by the size of their yam barn and livestock pens. To this day, it is common for local residents to provide food for visitors rather than purchasing it from markets.
