Abak is a town and Local Government Area (LGA) situated in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Located approximately 18 kilometres from the state capital of Uyo, the area covers a landmass of 304 square kilometers. It was formerly part of Cross River State before being subdivided into several other local government areas, including Oruk Anam, Etim Ekpo, Ukanafun, and Ika.
The town serves as the local government headquarters and is composed of five clans: Abak Urban, Afaha Obong, Ediene, Midim, and Otoro. The Annang are among the notable tribes in the region. Historically, Abak was a significant economic hub for former Southeastern Nigeria prior to the Nigerian Civil War, primarily engaged in exporting palm produce through the river port at Ekpene Okpo, Ntak Ibesit.
Key landmarks and institutions in the area include the Ibagwa Barrack, a Nigerian Army facility, and the Ime Umana Campus of the University of Uyo. The university campus is located in Ediene-Abak and provides housing for Pre-Degree, JUPEB, and other special courses.
