Ipokia is a city and local government headquarters located in the western part of Ogun State, Nigeria. It serves as the capital of the Anago Kingdom, an ancient kingdom that originated from the old Oyo Empire. The town is situated near the border of the Republic of Benin and is considered a primary entry point to the Gateway State due to its proximity to the international boundary.
Historically, Ipokia is noted as an unconquered sanctuary city-state during the nineteenth-century internecine wars that affected Yorubaland. Its origins are traced back to the 13th and 14th centuries when descendants of Ọranmiyan migrated from Oyo-Ile, moving through various locations before settling in Ipokia with the guidance of Ifá divination. The town serves as a significant exit route for road and water travel to the outside world.
The local government area was officially carved out of the former Egbado South (now Yewa South) local government in 1996. In addition to Ipokia town, the region includes several other settlements such as Idiroko, Oniro, Ita Egbe, Tongeji Island, Aretedo, Ihunbo, Agosasa, Aseko, Maun, Koko, Ropo, Alaari, Tube, Ilashe, Ifonyintedo, Madoga, Idosemo, and Ijofin.
