Makoko is an informal settlement located on the coast of mainland Lagos, Nigeria, situated across the 3rd Mainland Bridge. The community is characterized by its unique geography, with approximately one-third of the settlement constructed on stilts along the lagoon while the remainder sits on land.
The waterfront portion of Makoko is primarily inhabited by the Egun people, who migrated to the area from Badagry and the Republic of Benin. The primary occupation for residents in this part of the community is fishing.
