Akowonjo is a neighborhood located in Lagos State, Nigeria. The area serves as a residential settlement primarily inhabited by the Egba people.
The Egba settled in Akowonjo circa 1830 to escape intertribal wars and conflicts occurring in the region at that time. According to local historical accounts, the settlers cleared and claimed the land from a dense forest to establish a permanent settlement rather than acquiring it through purchase.
