Nouméa is the capital and largest city of the French special collectivity of New Caledonia. Located on a peninsula in the south of the main island, Grande Terre, it serves as one of the most industrialized cities in the South Pacific.
The city is notable for being the largest Francophone city in Oceania. It sits on a protected deepwater harbour that functions as the primary port for New Caledonia. The local population is diverse, consisting of many Melanesians, Ni-Vanuatu, and indigenous Kanaks, alongside significant European, Polynesian, Indonesian, and Vietnamese communities.
