Quelimane is a seaport located in the Zambezia Province of Mozambique. It serves as the administrative capital and the largest city within the province. The city is situated approximately 25 kilometers from the mouth of the Rio dos Bons Sinais, a river named by Vasco da Gama during his voyage to India because he observed "good signs" that he was on the correct path.
Historically, Quelimane served as the endpoint for David Livingstone's west-to-east crossing of south-central Africa in 1856. While Portuguese is the official language of Mozambique and is spoken by many residents in the surrounding areas, Chuabo is the most common local language. The region is characterized by its susceptibility to significant flooding during the country's rainy season.
