Kudat is a city located in Malaysia and serves as the capital of the Kudat District within the Kudat Division of Sabah. Situated on the Kudat Peninsula, it is positioned approximately 190 kilometres (120 mi) north of Kota Kinabalu, the state capital. The town is notably situated near the northernmost point of Borneo and holds the distinction of being the northernmost Malaysian city.
The area serves as a major center for Rungus culture, representing the heartland of the Rungus people, who are a sub-ethnic group of the majority Kadazan-Dusun race. Historically, Kudat is significant as one of the first regions in Sabah to be settled by Chinese Malaysians, specifically those from the Hakka dialect group. As of 2010, the city's population was estimated to be around 29,025.
