Kota Kinabalu, colloquially known as KK, is the state capital of Sabah, Malaysia. It serves as the administrative center for both the Kota Kinabalu District and the West Coast Division of Sabah. The city is situated on the northwest coast of Borneo, facing the South China Sea.
The city derives its name from Mount Kinabalu, which is located to its east. Notable geographical features in the vicinity include the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, located to the west of the city. As of the 2020 Census, the municipal population reached 500,421, while the wider metropolitan area including the Penampang and Putatan districts recorded a population of 731,406.
