Cheras refers to an ancient dynasty, also known as Kedalaputho, that originated during the early historic or Sangam period in southern India. The dynasty is recognized as one of the three major powers of Tamilakam, alongside the Cholas and Pandyas, with historical records dating back as early as the third century BCE.
The Chera country was situated at the tip of the Indian peninsula, covering parts of what are now the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. This geographical position allowed the dynasty to profit significantly from maritime trade networks across the Indian Ocean. They were notably involved in the exchange of spices, particularly black pepper, with merchants from the Middle East and the Graeco-Roman world.
Chera influence remained prominent over central Kerala and western Tamil Nadu until the conclusion of the early historic period in southern India.
