Kanowit is a town located in Sarawak, Malaysia, serving as the capital of the Kanowit District within the Sibu Division. The district covers an area of approximately 2,253.5 square kilometres. As of 2010, the town had a recorded population of 28,985 residents.
The town is situated at the mouth of the Kanowit River on the bank of the Rajang River, positioned roughly 174 kilometers from the South China Sea coast. It is accessible from Sibu by land transport in about 45 minutes or by boat in approximately one hour. The primary ethnic groups residing in the area include the Iban, Chinese, Malay, and Melanau people.
